How to write a CAE essay/letter/report/proposal

A Skype chat with Marina in Italy – we discuss how exactly to plan the essay to some extent one of the CAE test that is writing. Most CAE students do not make obvious, basic mistakes like your/you’re or its/it’s. Nevertheless they do struggle with things such as:
You need to learn the essential difference between defining and non-defining relative clauses. Your clauses that are non-defining commas, while your defining clauses shouldn’t have commas.
I experienced lunch with my grandfather, who is 90 years old. (the half that is second of sentence informs you more about my grandfather. It’s bonus information, so there has to be a comma.)
I experienced lunch with my buddy who lives in Prague. (I am very cool and popular – I have a lot of friends. https://essay-911.com I had lunch with my friend’ you don’t know which friend I mean if I say. So that the ‘who lives in Prague’ clause gives you information that is essential. Therefore, no comma!)
Note that pronouns that are non-defining be changed to ‘that’, therefore you should never write a comma followed by ‘that’. (it is especially a problem for German speakers because in German you must use a comma before ‘that’.)
Gerund infinitive that is vs
Gerund means the form that is-ing of verb. This really is a tricky element of grammar because there are not any rules and you have to learn every verb one after the other. English! Argh! Anyway, make certain these structures are known by you:
I used to live in China (= I lived in China).
I’m used to hearing German (= hearing German is normal for me).
I look forward to meeting you.
I stopped smoking (= I quit).
I stopped to smoke (= I stopped the things I was doing because i needed to possess a cigarette).
I would recommend buying new computer equipment. (Suggest and advise are also followed by gerunds.)

So hard! So prepositions that are many! So many mistakes! Just learn up to you can easily and remember, every student that is single has ever taken the CAE exam has struggled with prepositions. It’s not just you!
I will move to Zurich if I get the job. (The speaker is confident.)
If i acquired the task I would personally proceed to Zurich. (The speaker is certainly not confident.)
I would have moved to Zurich if I had got the job. (nevertheless the speaker did not have the job and did not go on to Zurich.)
Not risks that are taking
Plenty of students always write the same, safe, things they always write. To understand advanced vocabulary and structures you need to use advanced vocabulary and structures!
It is hard adequate to produce a piece that is well-structured of with good vocabulary that fits the information. But understand that the examiners read hundreds and a huge selection of essays and most of those are particularly boring! Yours interesting (though the style, unexpectedly good vocabulary, maybe even a joke or two) the examiners will be VERY happy and you will be REWARDED if you make.

Q – Do i must use British spelling?
A – No, no matter. However, if you employ American spelling, be consistent throughout your writing.
Q – How important is spelling and punctuation?
A – It is pretty important – it won’t be a big deal if you make a trivial mistake. Then you will lose points if the mistake stops the reader from understanding what you mean.
Q – How important is the expressed word count? What happens if I write too words that are many?
A – the expressed word count is helpful tips, not a rule. But you will write about 220-260 words if you do the task properly. Then you’ve probably written lots of stuff you don’t need if you write 300 words. In the event that you write 200 words you’ve probably forgotten something.
DO NOT waste time into the exam counting what amount of words you’ve got written! Rather than add or remove words just because for the word count – it’s going to come out clumsy and weird.
All that said, whenever you are practicing for the writing section, i suggest you stay glued to the suggested word count.

Q – I know i must use complex sentences to obtain a grade that is good but i am focused on making mistakes. Will it be better to have a simple text with no mistakes?
A – Cambridge says that students who make mistakes while attempting to use structures that are complex get credit for trying (as long as the mistake doesn’t stop the reader from understanding).
Q – My handwriting is terrible! No-one can see clearly! Am I going to lose points?
A – No. Your handwriting is not too important. Just make sure it could be read. Also, you should not rewrite your text (and you do not have time for you to rewrite it) – whether or not it’s got a lot of bits crossed out, don’t worry. Every student’s writing looks the same!
